1) Effect of reducing friction
It is the most important effect of lubricating oil, which reduces the friction in the moving area by forming oil film on the metal surface.

2) Cooling effect
When the temperature increases high through accumulation of heat from the lubrication area and outside, the deterioration of lubricating oil is expedited, and also equipment can be seriously damaged. So the heat should be promptly absorbed and released to the outside.

3) Stress dispersion effect
It is the effect of preventing abrasion caused by local high pressure by dispersing the pressure loaded on the lubrication area.

4) Sealing effect
Lubricating oil blocks the gap between the two machine components in the closed machine structure, having the effects of preventing the leakage of the lubricating oil, keeping the pressure in the machine and preventing the penetration of foreign substances from the outside.

5) Cleaning and dispersing effect
It is the effect of preventing the deposit and adherence in the machineof oxidized substances formed through the long time use of lubricating
oil and solidified sludge formed by moisture, dust and roughly burned substances, and dispersing the already-formed oxidized substances and sludge into lubricating oil as micro particles.

6) Anti-rust effect
Lubricating oil prevents rust on the metal surface due to oxygen in the air, water or corrosivegas.
 
 

1) Antioxidant
It prevents the formation of corrosiveacid and sludge by preventing oxidation of lubricating oil due to oxygen in the air.

2) Detergent dispersant
It has the effect of preventing the deposit and adherence of oxidized substances formed in the high temperature and sludge formed by foreign substances penetrated from the outside, and dispersing the already-formed oxidized substances and sludge into lubricating oil as micro particles.

3) Viscosity index improvement additive
It is the additive to reduce the changes in the viscosity due to the changes in the temperature by increasing the viscosity index.

4) Pour point depressant
When lubricating oil is in the low temperature condition, there is the separation of wax in it, which hinders the flow of the lubricating oil. Pour point depressant has the effect of improving the liquidity in the low temperature by preventing the congelationof wax.

5) Extreme-pressure additive
It prevents the direct contact between metals by forming new extreme pressure film in reacting with metal surface in case there is direct contact between metals due to destruction of the oil film by heavy load.

6) Oily nature improvement additive
It has the effect of reducing the coefficient of friction, being absorbed on the metal surface physicochemically when the sufficient oil film cannot be formed only with the viscosity of lubricating oil.

7) Anti-rust additive
It prevents rust on the metal surface by blocking the contact of air and moisture with the formation of film on the metal surface.

8) Antifoaming agent
It promptly removes bubbles created due to various causes and protects machines by preventing the destruction the film due to the bubbles.

 



1) Mixing with Blow-by Gas
Most of exhaust gas is discharged, but some enters inside of oil pan through the gap between piston ring and cylinder. The mixing of this gas affects negatively in various aspects, leading to the deterioration of lubricating oil.

2) Mixing of Moisture
Moisture in the blow-by gas, leakage of water from cooling system or moisture from the outside can be mixed. , and also Mixing of moisture forms low-temperature sludge, can be the cause of rust and corrosion and sometimes can cause engine due to the destruction of oil film in case of much volume.

3) Mixing of metal abrasion particles and dust
Especially SiO2, A12O3 and Fe2O3 among the dusts in the air affect negatively, leading to the abrasion of cylinder liner and piston ring.

4) Deterioration of Lubricating Oil by itself
The oxidation of engine lubricating oil is expedited under the condition that much acid gas is mixed in the high temperature and metal exists as a catalyst. In fact, the environmentof the inside of the engine satisfies the abovecondition, and in case of continuous heavy-load operation, oxidation is expedited.

5) Consumption of Additives
The additives, which are added to the lubricating oil to keep proper quality depending on the use and operational condition and to prevent corrosion of engine, are consumed as time passes. And when the volumes of additives are reduced below the standard, the performance of the lubricating oil drastically decreases.

1) Prevention of contamination from the outer source : Affixing packing gasket in the joint area, and filter and air breather in the oil-feeding hole area.

2) Considerations for tank
- Affixing a proper strainer
- Installation of a proper baffle plate
- Installing return pipe below the oil surface and higher by 3 times of the pipe diameter from the bottom of the tank.
- Installing suction pipe more than 50mm higher than the bottom of the tank.
- Installation of drain cock
- Making the bottom of the tank inclined
- Installing by-pass clarifying device in the tank
- Installing magnetic filter in the bottom area of the tank

 

In periodic analysis of the oil in use, the most important data are the ones for the operational data of the lubricating oil such as operation time, oil temperature, oil-feeding amount and the details of purification.
Direct Judgment

1) Direct Judgment
- Check the features of new oil in detail.
- Examine the features of the representative sample of the oil in use.
- Compare the features of the new oil with the used oil, set up the standard for control and exchange.

2) Simple Judgment
- It is possible to roughly judge the oil if you see through the oil put in the transparent test-tube to the bright direction.
- Clear: good (no relation with the color of oil itself)
- Hazy: contaminated (need test and analysis)
- Red and Black: oxidized(need test and analysis)
- Emulsion: Moisture (need instant exchange with new oil)
- Judge the mixing of fuel oil and content of impurities by smell.
- Judge the level of viscosity and amount of impurities by picking with a finger based on the experience.
- Judge the existence of moist by the sound of water splash by heating some oil in the test tube around 110กษ.
- Separate the oil and water completely by putting the same amount of oil and water in the test tube, stirring them hard and leaving it.
- Use simple viscometer, hydrometer and colorimeter if any at the site, or use simple test instruments.

To prevent the deterioration of lubricating oil in use, keep the economically good lubrication performance for long time and extend the lifetime, the causes to expedite oxidation of lubricant should be removed, the circulating system should be kept clean, impurities and oxidized substancesduring lubrication should be quickly removed and the exchange with or supplementation of new oil should be done at the proper time.

Cautions for the prevention of deterioration are as follows.
- Avoid high temperature.
- Avoid mixing of oils. (maintain the reaction of the additives and proper viscosity)
- Clean the new machine sufficiently before use (remove iron powder, rust particles, anti-rusting agent and etc.)
- Discharge the deteriorated oil completely when exchanging
- Remove the impurities quickly (moist, dust, metal abrasion particles and fuel oil)
- Clean the circulating system about once a year to keep it clean.
